Peacebuilding
Conflict, war, violence, and civil strife, are major causes for poverty, not to speak of the social misery and the personal tragedies they create. Peace and development are two sides of the same coin. Peaceful co-existence is a pre-condition for social and economic development and constructive change.
Working with groups of warring factions. Teaching and training conflict resolution and peacebuilding skills. Working towards reconciliation.
Examples:
- In 2007 facilitated meeting between militant and non-militant youth groups and the military in the Niger Delta on behalf of DAI (Development Alternatives, Inc.), IMTD (Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy), CESL (Century Energy Services, Ltd), and the Niger Delta Peace Forum (NDPF).
- On behalf of Oxfam UK: Development of a Rwanda-specific conflict resolution manual: Contributing to the National Reconciliation Process by Understanding and Resolving Family and Community Conflicts in Rwanda, Training-of-Trainers Handbook, 2004.
- With a grant from the US State Department: Building Civil Society and Peace in Nigeria ; Strengthening existing relationships between the Islamic and Christian communities within North Central and North East Nigeria (Kaduna and Taraba States). Developed with IRIS, Inc. this pilot project for reducing religious conflict in the area: Ten Muslim and Christian leaders from Kaduna and Taraba were selected for a six-weeks training in Iowa, USA, with a focus on conflict resolution education and training. Upon their return to Nigeria, the participants provided mediation and conflict resolution training in their respective states. 2001.
